People Operations Manager
Who we are
At Luna Health, we are driven by a singular mission: to bring the transformative power of insulin automation to the masses. We are a venture-backed medical device startup that aims to make life with insulin-requiring diabetes simpler and safer with innovative hardware and software. Our founders are industry veterans with firsthand experience managing diabetes, for themselves or for their child, and a track record of helping people with intelligent, simple-to-use medical products.
We offer a revolutionary approach to nighttime glucose control for people unwilling or unable to use a traditional insulin pump. Part of the world’s smallest patch pump, part first-of-its-kind closed loop insulin dosing algorithm, our sleep-only automation automatically adjusts insulin doses overnight, allowing users to get a good night’s sleep and their start days feeling refreshed and worry-free.
The role
We are looking for a People Operations Manager to own two things: how people join Luna, and how the place runs once they are here. You will report to the CFO.
We are hiring dozens of people over the next 12-18 months, across all areas of the business, including software, manufacturing, quality, and clinical.
This is a hands-on role rather than a supervisory one. You will run the hiring process alongside our hiring managers and our outside recruiters, and you will run the office: vendors, supplies, food, and the hundred small things that keep the place working. There is some assistance to the executive team as well, mostly travel and event logistics.
Please note that this is an on-site role and you must live within a reasonable commuting distance of the Luna Health office in Sorrento Valley, San Diego, CA.
Responsibilities
Hiring and People Operations
Recruiting Operations: Post openings, run our pipeline in BambooHR, and keep every search moving. You are the person who knows where all twenty stand without being asked.
Candidate Experience: Be the front-line contact for every candidate. Scheduling, logistics, and prompt, human follow-up are what decide whether strong people stay in our process. Coordinate on-site panels so candidates meet the team.
Hiring Manager Support: Help managers write job specs that describe the work honestly, build interview loops that test for it, and keep feedback consistent enough to compare candidates fairly.
Agency Management: Brief our outside recruiters, hold them to a submission bar, and track which ones deliver. Bring the numbers when it is time to renegotiate or walk away.
Onboarding and Offboarding: Own both, and treat them as the same opportunity. A new engineer should have a laptop, accounts, a first-week plan, and someone to eat lunch with on day one. A departing one should leave with their work properly handed over and a great experience of having worked at Luna.
The Office
Facilities: Keep the office set up, stocked, and in good order. Desks, supplies, equipment, and the tidiness a space this size loses within a week when nobody owns it.
Vendors: Select and manage our office vendors, including cleaning, coffee, snacks, catering, and building management. Own the office budget.
Events and Visitors: Run the logistics for team events, all-hands, and the board and investor visits that decide what impression people take away from the office.
Executive Support
Ad Hoc Assistance: Travel booking,, and event logistics for the executive team as they come up.
What you bring
We care more about what you have run than what you have supervised. The strongest candidates have owned both halves of this job at a company our size and know where each one breaks.
Experience
Professional Experience: 5 to 8+ years across HR, recruiting operations, or office management, including a stretch where you owned both at a startup or small company.
Hiring Volume: You have personally run fifteen or more concurrent searches in a real applicant tracking system, and you can say where a tool stops paying for itself.
Regulated Industry: Not required. Useful if you have worked somewhere that audits happen and records are expected to hold up.
Judgment and Skills
Discretion: You will see compensation, performance conversations, and departures before anyone else does. This one is not negotiable.
Self-Direction: You are the whole function here. Nobody will hand you a checklist, and the things that go wrong are usually the ones nobody thought to ask about.
Communication: You write clearly to candidates, to hiring managers, and to vendors, and you tell people bad news early.
Range: You can go from a compensation conversation to a catering order in the same hour without either one slipping.
What we offer
What to expect
The first step is to apply for this job on our website. Next, we will schedule a virtual interview with the hiring manager to introduce you to the company and the role. Finally, we will invite you on-site to discuss your experience and meet the team.
We are in a hurry to find the right person – not in a hurry to hire – so we will take time getting to know you and making sure that you will be an excellent fit for the work that we are doing.
